The Latin word “algo” means “pain” and “Logy” means “science”. Algology means "science of pain".

Pain is the feeling of constant and severe pain felt in any part of the body for reasons such as illness, injury or for no reason. With or without a cause; This unpleasant sensation, which encompasses all human experiences, is a condition that needs to be treated.

The department that deals with diagnosis, treatment and follow-up by identifying the causes of pain is called Algology. Algology is the department where the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of pain lasting 3 months or longer is made. The aim of the science of algology is to increase the quality of life lost due to acute or chronic pain or to restore it completely if possible.

Inguinal and abdominal pain, Back and chest pain, Low back and leg pain, Shoulder, neck, arm pain, Pain due to vascular occlusion, Pain caused by cancer, Neuropathic pain due to diabetes, Carpal tunnel syndrome, Rheumatic diseases, Shingles pain, Trigeminal neuralgia , Fibromyalgia, Hip, knee, ankle and foot pain, Pain after neck and waist hernia, Sciatica (Sciatic pain), Psychosomatic pains, etc., which are seen as a reflection of psychological disorders on the body. It is the pain that algologists are concerned with.

In Pain Centers (Pain Clinics), patients are primarily treated with simple painkillers. Low-level morphine and similar drugs are started for patients who do not benefit from the drugs prescribed as simple pain relievers. Starting from the lowest level of morphine, the dosage of the drug is determined according to how much it affects the patient's pain. If the patient does not benefit from weak morphine derivatives, use of strong morphine is started.

High doses of morphine-like drugs are not used in the treatment of patients who apply to the algology department due to chronic pain other than cancer pain. It is a priority to treat these diseases with interventional treatments.

A different treatment method is to burn the nerve blocks of the area where the pain is felt and disable them. In these advanced cases, it is an effective method applied if the doctor deems it appropriate.
