The family doctor is the physician who has the responsibility to provide comprehensive care to all those seeking medical care and to mobilize other health personnel when necessary. It can also be defined as a general medicine physician who accepts everyone who seeks care.

He is a medical school graduate who provides personal and continuous primary health care to families and the population affiliated to a health unit, regardless of disability, gender and age. Also known as General Practitioner.

In our country, this field of specialization was named as Family Doctor in the Medical Specialization Regulation in 1983, and since 1985, specialists in this basic field in public health have been started to be trained.

The competencies and basic characteristics of the Family Doctors can be listed as follows;

  • Management of primary health care center.
  • Establishing the first medical contact point in the healthcare system.
  • To provide open and unrestricted access to those who wish to receive services.
  • Dealing with all health problems regardless of age, gender or any other characteristic of the person.
  • To ensure the effective and efficient use of health resources. To do this by coordinating care for individuals, working with other healthcare professionals in primary care, and managing contact with services provided by other specialists, acting as an advocate on behalf of the patient when necessary.
  • Providing person-centered care.
  • Developing a person-centered approach towards the individual, family and society.
  • To establish a relationship that develops over time between the physician and the patient through effective communication.
  • To raise awareness and empower the patient so that they can take responsibility for their own health and manage their health problems.
  • To be responsible for ensuring the continuity of health services as determined by the needs of the patient.
  • Have alternative, authentic problem-solving skills.
  • A unique decision-making process in which the prevalence and incidence of disorders in the community are decisive.
  • To manage patients' acute and chronic health problems simultaneously.
  • It manages ailments that are presented as undifferentiated in the early stage of their development and may require immediate intervention.
  • To improve health and well-being through appropriate and effective interventions.
  • To take special responsibility for the health of the community.
  • Demonstrating a holistic approach.
  • Addressing health problems with their physical, mental, social and cultural dimensions.
