What is Nephrology?

Nephrology is the medical science that studies kidney diseases. A nephrologist is a specialist doctor who specializes in kidney health and kidney diseases. For nephrology specialization, it is necessary to take sub-branch specialization training following the internal diseases specialization training.

Which Diseases Does Nephrology Treat?

  • Glomerular disorders affecting the small filtering systems of the kidneys, glomerulus,
  • Urinary problems such as excessive protein excretion, sugar, blood, wastes, crystals,
  • Renal vascular diseases that adversely affect the blood vessel networks in the kidneys,
  • Kidney failure, which can be sudden or acute or long-term or chronic,
  • Bladder and kidney stones,
  • kidney infections,
  • Kidney, bladder and urethra cancer,
  • acid base imbalances,
  • Nephrotic syndrome and nephritis,
  • Side effects of drugs and toxins on the kidneys,
  • Autoimmune vasculitis, autoimmune diseases including lupus,
  • Polycystic kidneys are diseases in which large cysts or fluid-filled sacs form in the kidney that impair their function.

TREATMENT OF RENAL FAILURE

Treatments Applied for the First Period:

  • Blood pressure control: Patients with kidney failure often have high blood pressure problems that are difficult to control. A nephrologist can administer medication for high blood pressure to preserve kidney function. It is useful to have frequent check-ups, as high blood pressure medications can reduce kidney function at first.
  • Control of cholesterol level: Patients with kidney failure generally have bad cholesterol at a rate that increases the risk of heart disease. Cholesterol drugs can be used for this.
  • Anemia drugs: Anemia drugs can be used in cases of anemia.
  • Treatments for fluid accumulation: People with chronic kidney failure may experience fluid accumulation in their body. During the treatment process, drugs that prevent this condition can be used.
  • Low-protein diet: In order to reduce the burden on the kidneys, a low-protein diet is important in terms of reducing the problems that may be experienced.
  • There are two ways to treat end-stage kidney disease.
  • Dialysis: The process of cleaning the blood, which the kidneys cannot do properly, is carried out with the help of a device. Dialysis does not cure kidney failure. However, it is necessary to undergo dialysis at certain intervals in order to survive. Dialysis can be performed in two ways as hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis, depending on the patient's condition.
  • Kidney Transplant: It is the transplantation of a functioning kidney to replace a non-functioning or underactive kidney. Although there is a long waiting list in cadaveric kidney transplants, kidney transplants can be performed in a short time in live-to-live kidney transplants. After kidney transplantation, patients do not need to undergo dialysis.
