What is Sports Medicine?

Sports medicine is a branch of medicine that deals with physical fitness and the treatment and prevention of sports and exercise-related injuries. Sports physicians are people who have completed their medical education and specialize in sports medicine or 'sports and exercise medicine'.

Which Diseases Does the Department of Sports Medicine Treat?

Sports Medicine Specialists; It takes care of a wide variety of diseases such as dislocations, fractures, sprains and traumas. In addition to dealing with subjects such as exercise physiology and biochemistry, internal diseases, sports traumatology, regular static and dynamic examinations of recreational sports, focusing on performance measurements and follow-ups, identifying the mechanisms of sports injuries and reducing the possibility of injury, trainings for athletes. While making it more beneficial, they provide important services such as bringing injured athletes back to their former performance as soon as possible. Apart from these, exercise prescriptions for the prevention and treatment of many chronic diseases such as obesity, osteoporosis, coronary heart diseases, asthma and diabetes also include other service areas of sports physicians.

We can examine the causes of sports injuries under two headings;

  • Environmental Reasons: Pushing the physical limits without warming up, choosing the wrong material, not following the sports rules, bad weather conditions and unsuitable ground for sports.
  • Individual Causes: Weak muscle and bone structure, previous illness, injury and surgery, chronic diseases, infections, psychological problems, age and gender.
  • What Should Be Considered to Prevent Injuries?
  • If there is a previously known health problem, the doctor should be consulted before deciding to do sports and risky sports should be avoided.
  •  Before starting contact or competition sports, at least 15-20 minutes of warming up and muscle stretching exercises should be done.
  • Detailed information about the sport to be performed should be obtained and appropriate clothing, shoes and materials should be used for this sport.
  • If conditions such as extreme fatigue, palpitations and dizziness occur during sports, sports should be stopped.
  • First of all, it should be determined whether there is an obstacle to sports with a health screening.
